Counter PC: desktop, all-in-one touch PC or laptop?
Which computer to put at a billing counter, and the one upgrade that matters more than the processor.
The billing computer is on for ten or twelve hours a day, near dust, heat and the occasional spilled tea. It does not need to be powerful. It does need to be reliable and quick to start billing.
Desktop PC
The most economical choice, and the easiest to repair - any part can be replaced locally. A Core i3 or i5 with an SSD and an LED monitor runs any counter billing software comfortably. Good for retail, grocery, pharmacy and wholesale counters.
All-in-one touch PC
Screen and computer in one unit, with a touch screen. Less space, fewer cables, and much faster for restaurants and fast food where the cashier taps menu items. Costs more than a desktop and is harder to repair part by part.
Laptop
Useful for the owner, a back office, or as a spare. A poor choice for the main counter: batteries wear out when kept on charge all day, and the keyboard takes the wear of every sale.
The upgrade that matters most
An SSD instead of a hard disk. It is the difference between a PC that starts billing in 20 seconds and one that takes three minutes after a power cut. Add a UPS so a load-shedding switch does not corrupt the day's data.
Common questions
Is a 4th generation Core i3 enough?
For billing, yes - with an SSD and 8 GB RAM. Heavy reports on years of data run faster on an i5.
Do I need Windows 11?
No. Most counter software runs on Windows 10 and 11. Ask the software seller which versions they support.
