Setting up a grocery store or mart counter: what you actually need
The equipment list for a kiryana store or mini mart, what to buy first, and what can wait.
A grocery counter handles more small sales per hour than almost any other shop, and a lot of those items are loose - sugar, daal, dry fruit, vegetables. The setup below is what keeps the queue moving without buying things you will not use.
The core counter

Loose items: weigh-and-label or weigh-at-counter
There are two ways to sell loose items. At a small shop, the cashier weighs the item and types the weight into the bill. It works, but it is slow and errors creep in.
At a busier store, a barcode label printing scale weighs the item at the back counter and prints a label with the weight and price in the barcode. The cashier simply scans it, exactly like a packed product. It is faster at the till and removes arguments about weight.
Your own barcodes
Items you pack yourself - rice in 5kg bags, spices, bakery - need their own barcode labels. A barcode label printer and the right label rolls let you print them from the same item list your POS uses.
Shelving that sells
Gondola racks in the middle of the floor and wall racks around the edge are the standard mart layout. Stainless steel racks cost more than painted ones but do not rust in a store where floors are washed daily, which matters for vegetables and cold drinks.
What can wait
A customer display, a second counter and anti-theft gates are useful, but most grocery stores add them after the first busy season, once they know where the queue actually forms.
Common questions
Can the scale labels be read by any POS software?
The scale prints a standard barcode with the item code and price or weight inside it. The POS has to be set up to read that format - worth confirming before you buy both.
How many counters do I need?
As a rough guide, one counter handles a small store comfortably. If customers regularly wait behind three or more people in the evening, a second counter pays for itself.
